Captain Abbas Ali Was Born

On this day on 3 January 1920, the revolutionary and soldier of the Indian freedom struggle, who was a captain in the Indian National Army led by Subhas Chandra Bose, Captain Abbas Ali was born in Khurja Bulandshahr. He was arrested, imprisoned, court-martialed and sentenced to death for revolt against the British and later released after Independence by the Indian government.


Sykes-Picot Agreement Signed

On this day, on 3 January 1916, the borders of the Middle East (then Ottoman Empire) were drawn and carved into different nations by a Briton, Mark Sykes, and a Frenchman, Francois Picot, giving Europe the access to create the fragmented, modern Middle East, including the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

A century later, the border architecture created by the British and French has turned the region into one of the most volatile regions in the world.
