On This Day In Muslim History: June 13

The Reign of the Abbasid Khalifah, Al-Mustansir II, Begins

On June 13, 1261 (5/6 Rajab, 659 AH), the reign of the Abbasid Khalifah, Ahmad Al-Mustansir of Cairo, began. Al-Mustansir had been imprisoned by his nephew, al-Musta’sim, in Baghdad. He managed to escape after the Mongol invasion and sought refuge with Arab tribes. Later, he became the Khalifah in Cairo, installed by the Mamluk Sultan Baybars I. Despite his efforts to recover Baghdad, he was killed in a Mongol ambush. His lineage continued as figurehead Khalifahs until the Uthmani conquest of Egypt in 1517.
