Abdal Hakim Murad

Early Life and Education

Born in London, England, on May 15, 1960, Murad grew up in a non-religious family in London, and converted to Islam in his late teens in 1979. He was educated at Westminster School and graduated with a double-first in Arabic from Pembroke College, Cambridge in 1983. He then went on to study at Al Azhar University in Cairo and further private study with individual scholars in Saudi Arabia and Yemen. After returning to England, he studied Turkish and Persian at the University of London.

Murad is a traditionalist Muslim who follows the Hanafi school of jurisprudence, and is a student of the Syrian Islamic scholar Shaykh Muhammad al-Yaqoubi. He is also a member of the UK Islamic community and has been an active member of the Muslim Academic Trust, a UK based Islamic educational charity.

After completing his education, Murad began a distinguished career as a teacher and researcher in the field of Islamic studies. He held various academic positions, including as a lecturer in Islamic studies at the University of Cambridge, and as a research fellow at the Woolf Institute for the study of Abrahamic religions. He is also the Dean of Cambridge Islamic College and the Director of Studies at the Cambridge Muslim College.
