Sudarshan News, a Hindi news channel, which is infamous for spewing hatred and inciting violence against Muslims, aired a graphical depiction of bombing Masjid an-Nabawi in Madina in its show ‘Bindas Bol’ on May 15 hosted by its rabble-rousing anti-Muslim editor, Suresh Chavhanke.
The channel’s show, ‘Bindas Bol – आओ इजराइल का साथ दें, कल की लड़ाई का साथी है इजराइल’ (Come support Israel, Israel is the partner of tomorrow’s fight), aired the inciting graphics, depicting the bombing of Islam’s second holiest place, while calling its viewers to support Israel, arguing that the country will stand with India in its future wars.
Israeli airstrikes in the besieged Palestinian city of Gaza have killed more than 200 people over the past week, including women and children. The latest terror attacks by Israel on Palestinians began in east Jerusalem last month when Palestinians staged protests against the threatened eviction of dozens of Palestinian families by illegal Jewish settlers Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood.
Last week in the month of Ramadan, Israeli security forces raided Islam’s third holiest place of worship, the Al Aqsa complex, to disperse worshippers at the mosque. Hundreds were injured and hospitalized, according to the Palestinian Red Crescent.
The attack on Gaza has sparked pro-Palestinian protests in cities across Europe, the United States, the Middle East, and other parts of the world, however, in India, right-wing extremists like Chavhanke have been airing programs on tv channels and trending hashtags on social media showing support for Israel.
The channel’s blatant attempt to depict the attack on the holy city of Madina has angered Muslims, with many calling for legal action against it and its editor.
Chavhanke and his channel have a history of inciting violence against Muslims and spewing misinformation about Islam. Last year, the supreme court had restrained Sudarshan News from telecasting episodes of the channel’s show that claimed to unveil an alleged conspiracy behind how “Muslims have infiltrated the civil services”. The court had pointed out that the programme was “insidious” and was telecast with the intent and purpose of vilifying Muslims.
