The Israeli aggression on Gaza has killed more journalists since October 7, than any other conflict in history.
As of January 11, 2024, CPJ’s (Committee to Protect Journalists) preliminary investigations showed at least 79 journalists and media workers were among the more than 24,000 killed since the war began on October 7. While that is the CPJ count the Gaza Media Office reports that the actual number of journalists killed is close to 111 as of January 11.
Journalists in Gaza face particularly high risks as they try to cover the conflict during the Israeli ground assault, including devastating Israeli airstrikes, disrupted communications, supply shortages and extensive power outages. Despite the many challenges faced by them for simply doing their jobs in a time of crisis, journalists in Gaza have brought before the world the horrors of the atrocities unleashed upon the Palestinians in real time and have ensured that the world witnesses both the strength and determination of the Palestinian people along with each and every Israeli crime committed on Palestinian soil. At a time when there is severe loss of connectivity, Gazan journalists have put their lives on the line to protect their land and people, in the hope that reality triumphs over injustice.
Journalists and media workers operating in areas of armed conflict must be protected and allowed to perform their work without undue interference. Attacks intentionally targeting journalists, as civilians, constitute to war crimes.
