On This Day In Muslim History: January 9

Russo-Turkish War Ends

This day, on 9 January 1792, marks the culmination of the Russo-Turkish War of 1787-1792, where the Ottoman Empire lost all its strongholds in the western Ukrainian Black Sea coast to the Russians after signing the Treaty of Jassy, giving Russia unchallenged dominance over the Dniester and Danube rivers. All Civilians captured were executed.


Fatima Sheikh Was Born

On this day, on 9 January 1831, the celebrated Indian educator, Fatima Sheikh was born in Pune. She and her siblings opened their home to social reformers Jyotirao and Savitribai Phule to co-found the Indigenous Library in 1848 after the couple were evicted for attempting to educate people in lower castes.
