On This Day In Muslim History: January 29

The Mongol Sack of Baghdad

On this day, on 29 January 1258, began the Mongol conquest of the Abbasid Khilafah culminating in the horrific sack of Baghdad that effectively ended the Islamic Golden Age. The Mongols under the command of Hulagu Khan executed the Khalifah Al-Musta’sim and massacred many residents of the city.

Martyrdom Of Ali Ibn Abi Talib

This day marks the martyrdom of Ali Ibn Abi Talib (RA), cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) and fourth of the rightly guided Khalifa of Islam. The first child to accept Islam, he was courageous, noble, and just. The Prophet’s lineage survives through the progeny of Ali and his daughter Fathima.
