Recep Tayyip Erdogan Was Born

On this day, 26 February 1954, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, politician and the current president of Turkey was born. Founder of the Justice and Development Party, his tenure saw advances in negotiations for Turkey’s membership of the European Union, economic recovery and investments in infrastructure including roads, airports, and a high-speed train network.


Nasir Jung Was Born

On this day, on 26 February 1712, Nizam of Hyderabad, Nasir Jung was born. After defying to pay tribute to the Maratha Emperor he was defeated in battle by the Peshwa Bajirao and lost the territories of Srirangapatna, Vellore and Gingee to the Marathas. He was killed at Sarasangupettai, by Himmat Khan, the Nawab of Kadapa.


Ahmed Zewail Was Born

On this day, on 26 February 1946, Ahmed Hasan Zewail, an Egyptian American chemist and the father of femtochemistry was born. The first Egyptian and the second African to win a Nobel Prize in Chemistry he is the recipient of Egypt’s highest state honour, the Grand Collar of the Nile and a dozen other awards.
