‘Muslim Women Rights Day’ Denounced

The BJP-led central government observed August 1 as “Muslim Women Rights Day” to commemorate the criminalisation of instant triple talaq.

Union Minister for Minority Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi even tweeted a poster encouraging people to thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi by using the hashtag #ThanksModiBhaiJaan

The announcement drew denouncement and ridicule, with many equating the law as a means to send Muslim men to jail.

Over 650 Muslims and non-Muslim rights activists signed a statement slamming the government for pretending to “save Muslim women while seeking to bring the Muslim community to its knees”.

They said the government has no moral right to declare any national day in the name of Muslim women.
