Footballer Ahmed Hussain, who had participated in the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, passed away on Friday due to COVID-19. He was 89-years-old.
Hussain breathed his last at Trinity Central Hospital in Bengaluru, Tanveer Ahmed, a member of Mercy Angels who helped in performing his last rites confirmed.
Born in 1932, Ahmed Hussain was a stalwart defender who played for the famed Hyderabad City Police team in the 1950s.
He was part of the Indian national team, which played the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, Australia. India achieved a memorable win at the Olympics destroying the hosts Australia 4-2 to enter the semi-finals. India became the first Asian country to reach the last four ever in the game.
Hussain represented India at various other international tournaments including the 1958 Asian Games and the Merdeka Tournament in 1959.
Post retirement he became the coach at the Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports (NSNIS) and nurtured many future talents.
