Women’s College In Jamshedpur Denies Students Entry Into Exam Hall For Wearing Hijab

As the hijab ban in educational institutions continues to extend in the non-BJP states, some Muslim hijab-wearing girls were denied entry to an examination centre in Jharkhand’s Jamshedpur city.

Muslim students were asked to remove their hijab before appearing for the class 12th board examination at a women’s college.

The girls kept waiting outside the examination centre for an hour when the college authorities asked them to remove their hijab.

The incident occurred on 18th June when some Muslim students of Karim City College in Jamshedpur went to the assigned centre, Women’s college to appear for their class 12th SSSC examination conducted by Jharkhand Academic Council.

The examination-in-charge appointed at the centre asked the hijab-wearing students to go back to their homes and return after removing their hijab and told them, “Wearing hijab is against the rules”.

The All India Minority Social Welfare Front (AIMSWF) intervened in the matter and registered a protest against the issue after a girl student objected to removing her hijab. The student approached the minority organization and complained regarding the issue.

A delegation of the AIMSWF also submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner of Jamshedpur on Monday, seeking proper action on the issue.

The Front’s president Babar Khan told The Cognate, “This is curtailing the educational and religious rights of the students. We have submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner and he has assured us of immediate action.”

He also said, “If this doesn’t work we will approach other minority rights institutions and higher authorities. We will make sure that these girls get to appear for the examination.”

The exam was supposed to be held on Monday but got postponed due to Bharat Bandh on account of a protest against the Agnipath scheme of the Central Government.
