Twitter suspended the accounts of prominent Muslim pages that were known for being a collective voice for minority issues in India, particularly Muslims. The pages would actively post news and commentary, related to matters concerning Indian Muslims.
Among the handles suspended include, @IndiasMuslims, @IndianMuslimahs, @_IndianMuslims and @StandWithKashmir
While it’s unclear the exact reason behind this suspension, but the microblogging platform has faced sharp criticism recently for blocking accounts of prominent activists, journalists and media platforms in India at the behest of the government for reporting on farmers’ protests challenging the Modi government.
Those blocked – including the investigative news magazine The Caravan, the political commentator Sanjukta Basu, the activist Hansraj Meena, the actor Sushant Singh, and the chief executive of the state-run broadcaster Prasar Bharti, Shashi Shekhar Vempati – were silenced inside India without warning and with little explanation, their pages carrying only the message “account has been withheld in India in response to a legal demand”.
