Chaudhry Afzal Haq Died
This day, on 8 January 1942 marks the 70th death anniversary of Chaudhry Afzal Haq, writer, humanitarian and champion of the needy in Punjab. He founded the Majlis-e-Ahrar-e-Islam, a political party that represented the voiceless urban lower-middle class. His written works include Islam and Socialism, Pakistan and Untouchability, Azadi-e-Hind among significant others.
Maulana Muhammad Salim Qasmi Was Born
On this day, on 8 January 1926, Islamic scholar and former Vice President of the All-India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), Muhammad Salim Qasmi was born. Recipient of the Mark of Distinction from Egypt, and the Imam Mohammad Qasim Nanotvi International Islamic Award, his lectures are preserved in five volumes with his many written works. In 1982, along with Anzar Shah Kashmiri, he co-founded Darul Uloom Waqf, Deoband and remained its chief rector.
Asghar Hussain Deobandi Died
On this day, on 8 January 1945, the Indian Islamic scholar and co-founder of Madrasatul Islah, Asghar Hussain Deobandi (also known as Mian Sayyid Asghar Hussain) was born. He taught Hadith at Atala Masjid, Jaunpur and at his alma mater, Darul Uloom Deoband. He co-edited Al-Qasim, a monthly journal published by Darul Uloom Deoband.
