Saadat Hasan Manto Died
This day (18 January 1955) marks the death anniversary of writer, playwright and author Saadat Hasan Manto. Celebrated for his stories of Indian partition, his Toba Tek Singh is among the 100 stories that shaped literature. Manto produced 20 short stories, five radio dramas, three essays, two sketches, one novel and some film scripts.
Bairam Khan Was Born
On this day, on 18 January 1501, Muhammad Bairam Khan, commander-in-chief of the Mughal army during the reign of Humayun and Akbar, was born. Guardian, chief mentor, adviser, teacher and trusted ally of Akbar he was called Khan-i-Khanan (King of Kings). Contributing greatly to the Mughal empire, he led the reconquest of Hindustan under Humayun.
