Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Was Born
On this day, on 18 February 1894, Rafi Ahmed Kidwai, politician and freedom fighter was born. India’s first Communications Minister, he was jailed by the British for his participation in the Khilafat and Non-Cooperation Movements and for organising the ‘no-rent campaign’ that protected the farmers of Rae Bareli district from economic depression.
Thābit ibn Qurra Died
This day marks the death anniversary of Thābit ibn Qurra, the Arab mathematician, physician, astronomer, and translator who made important discoveries in algebra, geometry, and astronomy. Considered the founder of statics in the science of mechanics, Thābit has authored 150 works on the anatomy of birds, veterinary medicine, embryology, blood circulation amongst others.
Nasir al-Din al-Tusi Was Born
On this day, on 18 February 1201, Nasir al-Din al-Tusi, a Persian polymath, architect, philosopher, physician, scientist, and theologian was born. Considered the creator of trigonometry, he wrote on subjects of math, engineering, prose, and mysticism. A crater on the moon, a minor planet and an observatory is named after him.
