Nabeez, also known as Nabidh and Nabeedh was one of the favourite drinks of the Prophet Muhammad (SAWS) and hence considered a Sunnah. It’s traditionally made with either dates or raisins but never mixed.
Benefits of Nabeez
Nabeez is one of the Sunnah foods because the Prophet (SAWS) consumed it.
Nabeez has many health benefits. It is an alkalizing tonic. It removes acidity from the stomach and other metabolic wastes from the body. It also enhances digestion as it is rich in soluble fiber. With all the health benefits of dates, it can be energising and rejuvenating.
Hadith on Nabeez
Ibn ‘Abbas reported that Nabidh was prepared for Allah’s Messenger (SAWS) in the beginning of the night and he would drink it in the morning and the following night and the following day and the night after that up to the afternoon. If anything was left out of that he gave it to his servant or gave orders for it to be poured out.
(Sahih Muslim No. 4971)
Nabeez in Ramadan
Staying hydrated while fasting in Ramadan is one of the key ways of maintaining energy levels throughout the day. Because of the health benefits of dates, Nabeez is an energising and rejuvenating drink.
Nabeez Recipe
Preparing Nabeedh is simple.
Nabeez Ingredients
- Ajwa or whichever date is available. Quantity: 3-4 Dates.
- Water. Quantity: 1 Glass.
Method:
- Soak dates overnight in a packed container. You can also use raisins if not dates.
- The next morning after Fajr, you can drink the water and eat the soaked dates or raisins like the Prophet (SAWS) used to do.
The drink should be consumed the next morning or within 12 hours of making it. Any longer and it will start to ferment and produce alcohol.
Note: Do not mix dates and raisins, while making Nabeez, as the Prophet (SAWS) prohibited us from doing so.
In this Holy month of Ramadan, let’s follow another sunnah and drink Nabeez!
