On the 30th anniversary of Babri Masjid demolition, Tushar Gandhi, the great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi said that today is the murder anniversary of secular inclusive India and the birth anniversary of politics of hate and divisive practices.

In a tweet, Gandhi said on Tuesday, “Today is anniversary of murder of Secular Inclusive India birth anniversary of politics of hate and divisive practices.”

“Demolition of Babri Masjid is symbolic of dismantling of a compassionate India and signalled beginning of unravelling of our Constitution,” he added.

On December 6, 1992, ‘kar sevaks’ in the culmination of BJP’s Rath Yatra demolished the Babri Masjid in Uttar Pradesh’s Ayodhya. At that time, several BJP leaders accused in the demolition case, which lead to Hindu-Muslim clashes across the country. Two First Information Reports (FIRs) were filed, one against unidentified ‘kar sevaks’ and the other against BJP leaders LK Advani and MM Joshi.

In November 2019, the Supreme Court ruled that the disputed site in Ayodhya must be handed over to a trust to oversee the construction of a Hindu temple.

In September 2020, a special CBI court acquitted all 32 Hindutva leaders including former Deputy Prime Minister LK Advani, former Union ministers MM Joshi and Uma Bharti, former UP Chief Minister Kalyan Singh for “lack of credible evidence” in Babri Masjid demolition case.
