Renowned Islamic scholar Maulana Khalid Saifullah Rahmani has been elected as the fifth President of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) during an executive meeting held on June 3 and 4 in the town of Mhow, Indore. This position had been vacant since the passing of the former president, Maulana Rabey Hasani Nadwi, in April last year.
Maulana Rahmani, originally from Darbhanga in Bihar, has been residing in Hyderabad for the past four decades. He is the founder head of the prestigious Islamic seminary, Al Mahad ul Aali al Islami, located near Pahadi Shareef on the outskirts of Hyderabad. The seminary attracts students from across India, and its graduates can be found in various countries, including Europe, North America, and Australia. Known as an authority in Islamic jurisprudence, Maulana Rahmani played a crucial role in the recent triple talaaq case. He was deeply involved in the research that formed the basis of the AIMPLB‘s counter affidavit filed in the Supreme Court, although the board ultimately lost the case.
With an extensive body of work, Maulana Khalid Rahmani is the author of numerous books on Islamic subjects, such as fiqh (jurisprudence), exegesis of the Quran, Hadith (sayings of the Prophet), a 10-volume book of fatwas (edicts), and the Seerah (biography) of Prophet Muhammad. His works, originally written in Urdu, have been translated into English as well. As a respected scholar, he is held in high regard across different Islamic schools, thanks to his profound knowledge of various disciplines of Islamic education.
Furthermore, Maulana Khalid is a member of the Institute of Collective Ijtihad in the Islamic Fiqh Academy in Makkah, Saudi Arabia. His expertise was sought after by the South African government in 1994 when they gained independence from apartheid rule, inviting him to assist in drafting Islamic laws for the nation.
Maulana Rahmani’s appointment as the AIMPLB President was met with unanimous approval from the board members, as confirmed by Maulana Khalid Rasheed Firangi Mahali, the Imam of Lucknow Eidgah. The AIMPLB comprises a total of 251 members, including 51 executive members. As part of the recent appointments, Maulana Fazlur Rahim Mujaddidi has been named the new General Secretary of AIMPLB, succeeding Maulana Khalid Saifullah Rahmani. Syed Shah Khusro Hussaini Gulbarga and Syed Sadatullah Husaini have been appointed as the new vice-chairpersons of the board, while Maulana Syed Bilal Hasni Nadwi, Maulana Ahmad Wali Faisal Rahmani, and Maulana Yaseen Ali Usmani have also joined the board.
During the June 4 conference, the AIMPLB focused on discussing the Uniform Civil Code and the meetings of its internal committees. With the election of Maulana Khalid Saifullah Rahmani, the board aims to continue its efforts in upholding Muslim personal law and addressing various contemporary issues affecting the community.
The All India Muslim Personal Law Board, formed in 1972, plays a crucial role in representing and safeguarding the interests of the Muslim community in India, particularly concerning matters of personal law and religious practices.
