The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) has unveiled plans to initiate a “systematic movement” aimed at ensuring that women receive their rightful share of paternal property. The board’s working committee has noted that while, according to Sharia law, daughters are entitled to a fixed portion of their father’s inheritance, this entitlement is often overlooked in practice. Similarly, the inheritance rights of mothers from their sons’ property and women from their deceased husbands’ property are frequently disregarded.
SQR Ilyas, the spokesperson for the AIMPLB, highlighted that the board has also identified several other pressing issues affecting women, including female foeticide, dowry, delayed marriages, attacks on women’s dignity, workplace exploitation, and domestic violence.
In response to these observations, the AIMPLB has made a strategic decision to focus on reforming society from within. To facilitate these reforms, the board has appointed three secretaries, each responsible for a different region of the country. Additionally, a committee has been established to develop a comprehensive plan for implementing the intended reforms.
During a recent meeting, participants commended the AIMPLB’s efforts related to the issue of a uniform civil code. The board played a pivotal role in garnering responses from approximately 6.3 million Muslims in response to the Law Commission’s inquiry on the uniform civil code.
Furthermore, the board’s working committee has expressed concerns regarding various issues related to Wakf properties. To address these concerns, conferences focused on Wakf properties are scheduled to be organized in five major cities.
