Madhya Pradesh: Sohail Khan’s Death In Police Custody A Planned Murder, Fact-Finding Team Urges Dismissal Of Convicted Police Officers

A fact-finding team of human rights activists probed the death of a 20-year-old youth Sohail Khan in the custody of Narcotics Police in Madhya Pradesh last week and concluded that it was a planned murder. The team was informed that during the post-mortem, serious injuries were found on Sohail’s entire body after he was brutally beaten up at the Narcotics Police Station. This is why Sohail succumbed to a heart attack, their investigation reveals.

The team has urged for immediate dismissal of convicted police officers and that they should be prosecuted for murder. In view of the economic condition of Sohail’s family, the team has sought compensation of Rs. 50 lakhs be given to the victim’s family. It has also urged that judicial protection be provided to family members and eyewitnesses as their lives could be in danger.

The team has demanded a high-level judicial inquiry due to a severe violation of human rights in the entire case.

The three-member independent fact-finding team comprised of Vasid Khan, General Secretary of National Confederation of Human Rights Organizations (NCHRO) Madhya Pradesh, Vijay Kumar of Madhya Pradesh Democratic Rights Forum (MPDRF) and social activist Yusuf Khan.

The team met the family, friends and neighbours of the deceased Sohail Khan. Family members told the team that during the post-mortem, serious injuries were found on Sohail’s entire body, including genitals.

The team also met with local journalists and senior social workers. When Superintendent of Police Tiwari was asked about the incident, he declined to say anything as the judicial enquiry was underway.
