Authorities in Karnataka are on high alert after members of Hindu right-wing groups threatened to ‘enter’ Jamia Masjid on June 4 in the historical town of Srirangapatna in Mandya district, and perform puja there, IANS reported.

Furthermore, the right-wing outfits have decided to move to the court to demand a survey of the masjid on the lines of the Gyanvapi masjid.

Giving calls on social media and at various events, Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal leaders asked people to participate in the ‘Srirangapatna Chalo’ programme. They threatened to go ahead with their plan since the district authorities did not respond to their request.

After increasing security in and around the Jamia Masjid, the district officials are also contemplating clamping prohibitory orders from June 3 and extending them to June 4.

The authorities of Jamia Masjid have already expressed apprehension and also appealed to the government to safeguard the mosque.

Earlier, an organisation called, ‘Narendra Modi Vichar Manch’ had made submissions to the authorities for a survey of the mosque.

Jamia Mosque, built by the ruler of Mysuru- Tipu Sultan during the year 1784, is also known as Masjid e- Ala. It is located inside the Srirangapatna fort. The masjid, which is a heritage site maintained by ASI has three inscriptions that mention the nine names of Prophet Mohammad.
