Hejje Mela: The Muharram Folk Dance Bringing Communities Together

Hejje Mela is a paired folk dance performed during Muharram by Hindu communities in rural areas of north Karnataka.

The mixed troupe of elders and children perform to a ballad which describes a dream of Bibi Fatimah having a vision of her father, the Prophet Muhammad.

The entire ballad has a free mix of Urdu and Kannada words.

Instruments such as drums, tabla, cymbals, and harmonium are used to provide the background score.

Hejje Mela is an example of harmony between the two predominant communities of India, the Hindus and the Muslims.

It provides a collaborative space for accomplishing the much needed communal amity in these troubled times.
