The Delhi High Court has sought response of the BJP-ruled Centre and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government on a plea filed by the victims of the North-East Delhi pogrom seeking enhancement of the compensation provided to them.

Justice Prathiba M Singh directed both the governments to come up with responses within four weeks. The petition by the riot victims demands the compensation be increased from 10 lakhs to 15 lakhs.

The AAP government had promised to give compensation up to Rs ten lakhs in cases of deaths, five lakhs in case of disability, two lakhs for serious injuries, twenty thousand for minor injuries, and five thousand for loss of animals respectively.

The government had also promised a sum of Rs five lakhs for damage of property under the ‘Delhi Government’s assistance scheme’ for the victims of communal violence.

Anti- Muslim violence had broken out in northeast Delhi on February 24 last year leaving at least 53 people dead and around 200 injured.
