Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, during a joint press conference with his Egyptian counterpart Sameh Shoukry in Cairo, called for the establishment of a Palestinian state and an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, marking 100 days of the Israel-Hamas conflict that has claimed thousands of lives.
Wang Yi stressed the need to “insist on the establishment of an independent, fully sovereign state of Palestine on the 1967 borders, with east Jerusalem as its capital.” The joint statement released by the ministers emphasized the urgency to halt “all acts of violence, killing, and targeting of civilians and civilian establishments.”
Israel initiated a robust military campaign in response to Hamas’s deadly October 7 attack on southern Israel, resulting in approximately 1,140 deaths, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official figures.
In Gaza, where at least 23,968 people, predominantly women and children, have been killed, Shoukry and Wang called for an “international summit for peace” to seek a just, comprehensive, and lasting solution to the Palestinian cause by ending the Israeli occupation and establishing an independent, contiguous Palestinian state.
The Gaza Strip and the occupied West Bank, home to the Palestinian Authority, remain divided by Israeli territory, seized during the 1967 Six-Day War. Chinese President Xi Jinping has previously advocated for an “international peace conference” to address the ongoing conflict.
China, historically supportive of the Palestinian cause, maintains a stance favoring a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
