Bengaluru: Man Booked For Manhandling Police And Creating Ruckus At Restaurant Over Islamic Signboard

The Kodigehalli police have registered a case against a man for manhandling police personnel and causing a disturbance at a local restaurant. The accused, identified as Ramesh Gowda was apprehended after staging a violent protest in front of the establishment due to an Islamic signboard.

Ramesh Gowda has been charged under sections 353 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code for assault, using criminal force to deter public servants from their duties, and criminal intimidation. The complaint was filed by Sub Inspector Koushik N.V., who rushed to the restaurant upon receiving a distress call from a colleague in need of backup.

Upon arrival at the scene, Koushik observed Ramesh Gowda and his associates protesting against the signboard and causing a commotion in front of the restaurant. Allegedly, they also issued threats to the police, stating their intention to have them suspended from their jobs, The Hindu reported.

The signboard in question displayed the Kalima Shahadah, the Islamic Declaration of Faith, written in Arabic—an inscription commonly found in Muslim households and establishments. Ramesh Gowda vehemently objected to the signboard, removing it forcibly and derogatorily referring to it as a “Pakistani board.” He also hurled abusive slurs at the restaurant owners.

When confronted by the police, Ramesh Gowda allegedly engaged in physical altercations with the officers. Subsequently, he was apprehended and transported to the police station in a police van. However, even at the station, the accused continued to create a disturbance, throwing objects around and deliberately falling to the ground. Eventually, he was placed under arrest.

Meanwhile, the assistant manager of the restaurant filed a separate complaint against Ramesh Gowda and two of his associates. According to the manager’s account, the accused, accompanied by his associates, entered the establishment at approximately 11:45 p.m. and demanded biryani. Soon after, they vandalized the premises, damaged the cash counter, and physically assaulted the staff members who attempted to intervene.

The distressed staff immediately contacted the control room, prompting the dispatch of a Hoysala patrolling vehicle to the location. However, the initial response was unsuccessful in containing the situation, leading the officers to request additional backup.

The Kodigehalli police are currently investigating the incident from all angles and will take appropriate legal action against the accused individuals involved in the protest and assault. The local community has expressed concern over the incident, emphasizing the importance of maintaining peace and harmony among different communities within the region.

The police department and local authorities have reassured the public that such acts of violence and discrimination will not be tolerated, emphasizing their commitment to upholding the law and ensuring the safety and security of all citizens, regardless of their religious or cultural backgrounds.
