Backlog Of Over 69,000 Cases Pending In Supreme Court, 59 Lakh In High Courts Nationwide

According to a report presented in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday, there is a significant backlog of cases in India’s courts, with 69,511 cases pending in the Supreme Court and over 59 lakh cases pending in the 25 high courts across the country, PTI reported.

Law Minister Kiren Rijiju provided details from the Supreme Court’s website and the National Judicial Data Grid, revealing that as of February 1st, 2023, the Allahabad High Court had the largest backlog with 10.30 lakh pending cases, while the Sikkim High Court had the smallest with only 171 cases.

The government, Rijiju said, has taken several initiatives to provide “suitable environment” for expeditious disposal of cases by the Judiciary.
