Ayberk Pekcan, the Turkish actor, who played the role of Artuk Bey in the popular Turkish series Dirilis Ertugrul or Resurrection Ertugrul, succumbed to lung cancer late Monday. He was 51 years old.
The actor had been battling for months. He had even shared a lengthy note about his illness a few months ago, saying: “Dear friends… The process that started with the doctor I went to with a complaint of back pain has come to this point today. I have lung cancer. The tumour has also spread to the liver and adrenal glands. Unfortunately, this disease did not show any symptoms in its initial stages. The first day of chemotherapy… My biggest support is my family. So are my friends nearby… I will do my best to regain my health. Keep your health wishes and prayers with you. Stay well…”
Born in 1970, he graduated from Mersin University’s Theater Department.
He starred in many productions, including the highly popular Valley of the Wolves (Kurtlar Vadisi) series. But it was the character of Artuk Bey he essayed in Dirilis Ertugrul, that catapulted him into international fame, gaining millions of followers around the world.
Sharing the news of his passing away Ertugrul writer Mehmet Bozdağ paid tribute to the late actor.
“I wish God’s mercy on our brother Ayberk…I wish patience to his family and fans, he wrote on Instagram.
