The All India Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) has strongly opposed the proposed Uniform Civil Code stating that it is contradictory to the fundamental rights of the citizens as the Constitution gives the right to practice, profess and propagate one’s religion.
Board officials and members rejected the UCC and said the Muslim community will not accept it, as it is not suitable and possible to impose such a code in a country like India where people from all the communities co-exist.
SQR Ilyas, Media Coordinator of the board addressing the media in a two-day convention held in Kanpur told, “Every citizen has been given the right in the Constitution to have faith in his religion and propagate it.”
He said, “Uniform Civil Code is inappropriate and impossible in a multi-religious country.”
The board has demanded from the government not to impose UCC on Muslims.
The board also demanded the enactment of an anti-blasphemy law to punish those who show disrespect to Prophet Muhammad.
They urged the governments and other institutions to discontinue interpreting religious texts or religious books related to Islam.
The convention appealed to the government to address increasing atrocities and hate crimes against minorities, Dalits and other disadvantaged groups.
They urged the Muslim community to follow the Shariah to deal with everyday issues as per sunnah, make nikah simple and discourage giving and taking dowry.
They also guided the community to resolve mutual disputes through mutual understanding and arbitration and if things do not work out, approach the Darul Qaza and other religious institutions.
They also commanded to avoid and discard the idea of inter-religious marriage, as it creates rifts in the society and affects communal harmony.
The two-day convention ended on Sunday in Kanpur.
