Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Tuesday said that the government will conduct a survey of madrasas in the state, as “all sorts of things” are coming to the fore about them.
Dhami’s statement comes just a day after Shadab Shams, the newly elected president of the Uttarakhand Waqf Board called for a survey of the madrasas in the state.
“Survey of madrasas is a must as all sorts of things are coming to the surface about them in different places. Their survey will bring out the truth,” Dhami told PTI.
This development also comes days after the Uttar Pradesh government announced to conduct a survey of “unrecognized” madrasas in the state to gather information about the number of teachers, curriculum, and basic facilities available there, among others.
However, it warned that if the madrasas were discovered to be involved in alleged “illegal activities,” strict action would be taken against them.
All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi, has criticised the move calling it a “targeted” survey of madrasas.
“It’s a targeted survey against the Muslim community. Survey of private schools, missionary schools, government schools, and RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh) schools should happen. Doing surveys of unaided madrasas is a targeted survey and is wrong,” he was quoted as saying by ANI.
Meanwhile, in the Uttarakhand Madrasas, CCTV cameras will also be installed for the sake of total transparency in their activities, Shams said.
As many as 103 Madrasas are run by the Uttarakhand Waqf Board.
