A 22-year-old youth in Bengaluru had to undergo surgery to have his right arm amputated after he was allegedly tortured in police custody. Salman was illegally detained for three days in the Varthur police station in connection with a theft case, where he was allegedly brutalised leading to infection in his arm.
Salman’s mother Shabina says he was picked up by plainclothes policemen on October 27 in connection with a theft case. She says he confessed to stealing three car batteries and even took the police to the people he had sold the batteries to. However, the family alleges, he was brought back again to the police station where was allegedly asked confess to other thefts which I had not committed.
Salman, who is currently recovering at the city’s Hosmat Hospital says he was tied upside down and beaten severely after he refused to confess to the other crimes.
Salman’s mother told The Cognate, the police refused the family to see Salman in custody and accuses the police to have demanded money for his release.
She said he was eventually released from police custody on October 31 with severe pain. She says as days passed by, the pain only became excruciating.
The family then consulted Hosmat Hospital, where the doctors said his right arm had to be amputated due to the spread of gangrene. The family was told the infection could pose a threat to his life.
Salman’s mother says they have already spent Rs. 3.5 lakh of medical expenses.
A report in the Indian Express says, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Whitefield) D Devaraj has sought a report from the Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) in the Varthur jurisdiction regarding the case.
