UP Election Results: 33 Muslim MLAs Elected, Up From 24 In 2017

The much-awaited results of the five state assembly elections have come in favour of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the ruling party in the central.

BJP swept 4 out of 5 states it had contested. The Aam Admi Party, led by Arvind Kejriwal, the party’s chief and the Chief Minister of Delhi, turned almost all other states’ eyes towards it by winning Punjab fighting against the Congress, the old national party that has its presence all over India.

In Uttar Pradesh, the ruling BJP won 255 seats out of 403. This is lower than the previous election results, where the party secured more than 300 seats in 2017.

However, the opposition, Samajwadi Party (SP), led by Akhilesh Yadav, managed to secure 111 seats against the BJP.

Meanwhile, the Muslim candidates fielded by the SP have made their presence in 70 seats where they have a 30% presence. The total population of Muslims in UP accounts for 19%.

The voters have elected as many as 33 Muslim candidates to the 18th Uttar Pradesh Assembly. The number of Muslim MLA’s was  24 in the last election.

Data says that these MLAs account for 8.93% of the 403 seats in the state. While this is the lowest in the percentage of Muslims, political observers say 33 is a good mark and might increase in the upcoming elections.

Mohammad Azam Khan from SP had won in Rampur with 1,21,755 votes, defeating the BJP’s Akash Saxena, who got 56,368 votes. His son, Abdullah Azam Khan, has also won the seats from Suar in UP with 1,26,162 votes.

Haidar Ali Khan, alias Hamza Mian, contested BJP ally Apna Dal’s ticket against Abdullah Azam Khan in Suar lost the race with 65,059 votes.

The former MLA Sibgatullah Ansari’s son and Mukhtar’s nephew Suhaib Ansari, who SP fielded in Ghazipur of Mohammadabad, won the battle against BJP’s sitting MLA Alka Rai by securing 111443 votes.

In Mau, Mukhtar Ansari’s son Abbas Ansari, contested from the SBSP ticket, defeated BJP’s Ashok Kumar Singh by 38,227 votes.

The fight from the SP against the BJP by fielding as many as 64 Muslim candidates is said to have made an impact though it is fewer than other parties. The number of Muslim candidates from BSP accounts for 88, 75 from Congress and 100 from AIMIM.

Besides these constituencies, the Muslims were also capable of winning more seats. They have also proved they can succeed in Kairana, one of the constituencies in UP that is considered the fort of BJP.

Nahid Hasan, with 1,31,035 votes from SP, emerged victorious against the BJP’s Mriganka Singh in Kairana.

As expected, the SP has also scored in Nizamabad, where Alam Badi was re-elected. He fought against Manoj, BJP. Alam’s total vote accounts for 79835, 43.22 in percentage.

In Meerut of Kithore and Moradabad of Kundarki, SP’s Shahid Manzoor and SP MP Shafiqur Rahman Barq’s son Zia-ur-Rehman won the seats, respectively.

While it is evident that SP managed to secure the maximum number of Muslim voters, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) played the spoilsport.
