Two Months On, Hindutva Supporters Continue Disrupting Friday Namaz In Gurgaon

The impasse on Friday congregational prayers of Muslims continues in Gurgaon as Hindutva supporters have said they will turn the Namaz site at Sector-12 into a sports ground but will not allow Namaz to be held there.

According to NDTV, a group of Hindutva nationalists on Friday (November 12) occupied the ground till late afternoon to prevent Muslims from gathering there for Namaz even as the community had already decided to not hold prayers at the site.

Last Friday Hindus held a Govardhan Puja event at the site which was attended by BJP leader Kapil Mishra. The event saw some Hindutva supporters making incendiary hate slogans against Muslims which went viral but the police are yet to take any action.

Meanwhile, some Hindutva supporters assembled at a park in Sarhol village and raised communal slogans which forced Muslims to move to an alternate site for Namaz. The video of the incident surfaced on social media showing them chant ‘Jai Shree Ram’ and ‘Bharat Mata ki jai’ slogans.

The fresh impasse over Namaz started in September when a Hindutva group led by Dinesh Bharti started disrupting Namaz in open at a site in Sector-14. With inaction from administration and Home Minister Amit Shah’s controversial statement over offering Namaz in the open, the Hindutva groups have grown emboldened and expanded their opposition to more sites.

The administration also buckled under pressure and cancelled permission at eight sites.

The Muslim community has been demanded the allotment of land for the construction of mosques in Gurgaon but the administration has not paid heed to the repeated appeals.

“Jumma Namaz disruptions will not end unless the Government of Haryana allocates land for building mosques so the Muslim Community can offer their prayers with dignity,” Altaf Ahmad, co-founder Gurgaon Muslim Council, said in a statement.
