Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH) has demanded the Tripura government to immediately halt anti-Muslim violence and ensure the security of Muslims and provide compensation for the destruction of mosques and other properties.
Speaking at a virtual press conference, organised jointly by a civil rights group, Association for Protection of Civil Rights (APCR) along with Students Islamic Organization of India (SIO), JIH secretary Malik Motasim Khan said, “Muslims in the state should be provided security and those responsible for the violence and terror should be punished in order to bring peace to the state. While lives and properties of the Muslim community are being brutally targeted, the opposition parties along with the ruling party have remained a silent spectator, which is encouraging rioters.” He has informed the media that they are visiting the state in a few days to meet the chief minister and they will also try to meet the Central government officials including the home minister over the issue.
Addressing media persons, APCR secretary Nadeem Khan and SIO Secretary Fawaz Shaheen informed that as many as 16 mosques were vandalized, including three torched by violent Hindutva mobs in Tripura. Quoting activists and residents in Agartala and other places, the APCR secretary said that at least 27 incidents of violence were reported in which the fanatic mobs attacked mosques, houses, and individuals in Muslim areas. “These include 16 incidents where mosques were vandalized, and Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) flags were forcibly hoisted on them. At least three mosques, Palbazar mosque in Unnakoti district, Dogra Masjid in Gomati district, and Narola Tila in Vishalgarh were set ablaze. There are also reports of houses of prominent Muslims being targeted and vandalized by various right-wing groups, including VHP, apparently in reaction to the incidents in Bangladesh. The government claims that the situation is normal. It blames the incidents in Bangladesh for the violence in the state. The irony is that 500 people have been arrested in Bangladesh so far, but no arrest has been made in Tripura,” Nadeem Khan added.
Virtually speaking on the occasion, Tripura secretary of SIO, Sultan Hussain said, “recently, the government imposed section 144 of Criminal Procedure Code in Dharmanagar and Kailashahar parts of North Tripura to prevent protests against the violence in the state. However, there has been no action in the areas which saw vandalism by the mob. The state and police authorities are creating an illusion of normalcy by deploying police personnel in a few areas”.
The details were provided at a press conference, where activists from Tripura and members of civil society spoke about the communal incidents.
