Tamil Nadu chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Friday declared that cases registered against anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protesters are to be dropped. The CM delivered the announcement while campaigning at Kadayanallur in Tenkasi district.
According to a statement from the CM, around 1,500 cases were registered against those involved in the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act that was passed in the Lok Sabha on December 4 and Rajya Sabha on December 11, 2019.
“Centre passed Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2019 in Lok Sabha & it was passed in State Legislatures later to amend Citizenship Act, 1955. Following this, members of some organisations protested in various parts of the state. About 1,500 cases were registered during protests,” ANI quoted Palaniswami as saying.
Cases against those booked for violation of the coronavirus lockdown norms are also to be dropped.
“I would like to inform you that all cases other than those registered for crimes including damage to public property, obstruction of police personnel and violence are dropped,” the AIDMK leader added.
