Several student groups and activists on Monday held demonstrations at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) here in support of former JNU student Afreen Fatima, whose house was razed by Uttar Pradesh authorities. More than 60 students and student leaders were detained by Delhi police outside of UP Bhavan.
Student unions, including Students Islamic Organization (SIO), Fraternity movement, Muslim Students Forum, and All India Students Association (AISA) protested against the ‘illegal’ demolition of Javed Mohammed’s and student activist Afreen Fatima’s house in Prayagraj on Sunday and the persecution of Muslim demonstrators in UP, Jharkhand and other parts of the country.
Javed Mohammed, leader of the Welfare Party of India on Saturday was arrested by UP police in connection with the protests that broke out in the district following Friday prayers against the now-suspended spokesperson BJP Nupur Sharma, where arson and stone-pelting were reported, claiming that he is the ‘key conspirator’ of the protests.
Jamia Millia Islamia University also witnessed demonstrations despite a heavy police presence that was deployed after it was known that protests are being organised.
The cops tried to prevent students from entering the campus but the students of JMI, including anti-CAA activist Ladeeda Farzana, entered the campus, protesting against the illegal demolition of Fatima’s house and the persecution of Muslim protestors across the country.
