Addressing growing concerns about the deteriorating ethical and professional standards in media, St. Joseph’s Community College in collaboration with St. Joseph’s College (Autonomous) and Lead Trust, in Bengaluru, have launched an intensive 6-month certificate and 1-year diploma course in journalism.
The Journalism program is designed to help learners start their career as a reporter, whether they are new students or hold a degree in a different area and are shifting career goals. Instructors with real-world experience will teach learners theoretical and practical skills that will enable them to seek entry-level employment in news and feature writing for newspapers, magazines, community journals, websites, radio and television.
Speaking about the significance of the initiative, Ameen-E-Mudassar from Lead Trust told The Cognate, “In recent times, journalism has become reduced to entertainment and propaganda, driven by corporates and certain political agendas. Journalism needs to be practised for what it truly is and represent the voices of the common man, hence the role of a journalist has gained greater importance.”
“After this intensive skill-based program, we strongly believe that passionate learners will go on to become exemplary journalists. With online platforms facilitating global reach, journalists today, have immense potential,” he believes.
Both programs are open to learners from the age of 18 with a minimum qualification of 12th standard. Graduates and postgraduates can also apply.
The curriculum covers a wide range of subjects that are grounded in the demands and needs of the media industry, including newspaper reporting, videography, photography, writing skills, public relations (PR), layout design, social media tools, content writing, psychology and political science.
The course also includes interactive classroom teaching with media experts and practising journalists, discussions with renowned journalists, fieldwork and internship opportunities.
The course fee is Rs. 15,000 for the 6-month certificate course and Rs. 30,000 for the 1-year diploma course.
Up to 100% scholarship will also be provided to students based on merit, financial background and performance in the selection interview. Outstanding students will be selected for Lead Trust’s, ‘LEAD Journalism Fellowship’ of Rs. 50,000 /- per student.
