The Supreme Court on Wednesday agreed to hear a batch of pleas next week, challenging the Karnataka High Court judgement refusing to lift the ban on hijab in educational institutions within the state.
A bench comprising Chief Justice NV Ramana and Justices Krishna Murari and Hima Kohli took note of the submissions of advocate Prashant Bhushan that the matters were filed in March but were yet to be listed for hearing.
“The girls are losing out on studies,” Bhushan mentioned before the court.
The bench has agreed to hear the petition, “It will be listed sometime next week”.
In March, the batch of pleas against the Karnataka High Court’s verdict in the hijab case had been filed before the Supreme Court.
A three-judge bench of the Karnataka High Court on March 15 had dismissed a batch of pleas by Muslim students against the ban on wearing the hijab inside classrooms. The High Court had held that the hijab is not an essential practice of Islam and that educational institutions have a right to prescribe dress codes and the students must adhere to the same.
A Muslim student filed a special leave petition in the Top Court against the High Court’s order, following which more appeals were filed in the Supreme court.
