The Supreme Court has agreed to hear the bail plea of Alt News co-founder Mohammed Zubair on Friday in connection with a case registered against him for allegedly outraging religious feelings.
On Thursday, a supreme court bench of Justices Indira Banerjee and JK Maheshwari said that the matter will be listed on Friday subject to clearance from the Chief Justice of India.
Senior advocate Colin Gonsalves, appearing for Zubair told the top court that his client is facing death threats and worried about his personal safety and also urged the court to take up his bail application for urgent hearing.
While urging the court to list the matter urgently, he said, “There is a threat to his life as people out there are threatening him.”
On June 1, Hindu Sher Sena Sitapur district president Bhagwan Sharan had lodged an FIR against Zubair in Uttar Pradesh under section 295A (deliberate and malicious act intended to outrage religious feelings) of the Indian Penal Code and section 67 of the IT Act.
Delhi Police arrested Zubair on June 27 for allegedly hurting religious sentiments through one of his tweets.
The Police have also added new IPC sections 120B (criminal conspiracy) and 201 (destruction of evidence) and section 35 of the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act — against Zubair.
