A Delhi court has framed charges against seven men accused of the murder of a Muslim man during the northeast Delhi riots. The victim was walking back home after buying sweets.
The accused, Aman Kashyap, Arun Kumar, Ashish, Devender Kumar, Pradeep Rai, Krishan Kant Dhiman and Rahul Bhardwaj have been booked under Sections 143 (unlawful assembly), 147 (rioting), 148 (rioting, armed with deadly weapon), 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code read with Sections 149 (offence committed by any member of unlawful assembly in prosecution of common object) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC.
The victim, Monish was on his way back home after meeting his father and carrying sweets when he realized there was a riot when he reached the Yamuna bus stand. He was beaten to death with sticks and stones by the accused after his Muslim identity was established.
Though the accused “are not seen/visible in any CCTV footage/video-clip”, the charges were framed against them based on an eyewitness account who said that he saw the victim being beaten up by the mob.
The lawyers for the accused persons told the court that their clients were “falsely implicated by the investigating agency.”
On February 23, an anti-Muslim pogrom was unleashed in parts of North East Delhi, the worst the city has seen in decades. Over fifty people lost their lives, and thousands were left homeless.
The violence began after Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Kapil Mishra lashed out at anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act sit-in protests in the area, giving the Delhi Police a three-day “ultimatum” to clear them.
