Renowned Kannada Poet K.S. Nissar Ahmed Passes Away At 84

Celebrated Kannada poet and a household name in Karnataka Prof K.S. Nissar Ahmed passed away on Sunday at his residence. He was 84.

Prof Ahmed was suffering from age-related ailments for some time, but the death of his son in the USA recently had shattered him.

A geology professor by profession, he was a prolific poet and writer and a leading voice in the Navya literary movement.

His works include Manasu Gandhi, Bazaru, Nityotsava, Sanje Aidara Male and Manadondige Mathukathe. His celebrated anthem to Karnataka, Nityotsava (celebration of every day), is known to every schoolgoing child in Karnataka. This also earned him the title “Nityotsava Kavi”.

In 1982, Prof Ahmed won the prestigious Karnataka Sahitya Akademi Award for his Anaamika Anglaru, an anthology of poems.

He was the recipient of Padma Shri, Pampa Prashasthi, Rajyotsava awards and numerous other honours.

He chaired the 73rd Akhila Bharata Kannada Sahitya Sammelana in Shivamogga in 2007 and inaugurated the 407th edition of Dasara in 2017.

Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa called Prof Ahmed’s passing away as an “irreparable loss” to the state and the Kannada literary world.

Dy CM CN Ashwath Narayan recalled his famous poems ‘Nityotsava’, ‘Kurigalu sir Kurigalu’ and ‘Benne Kadda Namma Krishna’. Prof Ahmed’s contribution to modern Kannada literature was immense, he said.

JD(S) leader and former Chief Minister Kumaraswamy, in a tweet, said that Prof Ahmed’s ‘Jogada siri belakainalli’ still rang in his ears. “Literary contributions of Nissar, the cultural ambassador of our state, was unique,” he said

Congress leader and former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah also said that his demise was an irreparable loss.
