Dr. Tasneem Suhrawardy, a distinguished Associate Professor specializing in Indian Medieval History at St. Stephen’s College, University of Delhi, breathed her last on December 26, 2023. Her academic journey was marked by notable achievements, culminating in her Ph.D. from Jawaharlal Nehru University in 2004, where her research focused on “Central Asians in Mughal India: Migration, Settlement and Impact on North Indian Culture.”
Graduating with honors in History from the University of Delhi in 1986, Dr. Suhrawardy’s passion for historical studies extended beyond the classroom. Her expertise garnered invitations as a guest lecturer in American educational institutions and across India. Born to late Syed Saeedul Haq and late Shahida Suhrawardy, she was the youngest among her siblings. Her brother, Anis Suhrawardy, an accomplished lawyer, passed away in 2012. Dr. Suhrawardy is survived by her sister Nilofar Suhrawardy, a senior journalist, nephew Atif Suhrawardy (lawyer), and other immediate relatives, including Shamama Anis, Nauras, Amna, Omar, and Fadil.
The academic luminary suffered a cardiac arrest on the early morning of December 26, 2023, at Fortis Hospital, Gurgaon, where she had been admitted since December 20.
Her untimely demise is mourned not only in academic circles but also resonates as a profound loss for her relatives, friends, colleagues, and the underprivileged individuals she never hesitated to assist. The void left by Dr. Tasneem Suhrawardy’s passing is deeply felt, reflecting the impact of her contributions to the world of academia and her compassionate outreach to those in need.
