Prime Minister’s Christmas Celebration Acknowledged Amidst Concerns Raised by Christian Community

New Delhi, December 27, 2023

Christmas 2023 marked a unique celebration for India’s Christians as Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi extended an invitation to Christian representatives at his residence on December 25. The meeting garnered appreciation from high-ranking figures like Archbishop of Mumbai, His Eminence Oswald Cardinal Gracias, and Archbishop of Delhi, Most Rev. Anil Couto. Prime Minister Modi commended the Christian community for its historical contributions and current involvement in social services, education, and healthcare.

While the Prime Minister’s gesture received praise, concerns within the Christian community remain unaddressed. Many express dissatisfaction, questioning the government’s commitment to safeguarding constitutional rights amid rising attacks on Christians and their institutions. Criticism emerges as anti-conversion bills are introduced across various states in the country, and reports of Christian schools in Madhya Pradesh being prohibited from celebrating Christmas surface.

Despite Modi’s assertion that Christmas is a national celebration, instances like the reported ban on Christmas celebrations in Christian schools raise questions. Additionally, the Christian community urges the Prime Minister to address the situation in Manipur, where clashes between Meithis and Kukis have led to significant casualties, displacement, and damage to places of worship.

A burning issue highlighted is the challenges faced by Dalit Christians, extending beyond social and economic concerns to encompass questions of dignity and equality. The Christian community appeals to the Prime Minister to consider the issues of Dalit Christians and Muslims on par with other Dalit groups nationwide.

While expressing gratitude for the Prime Minister’s goodwill and hosting of Christmas celebrations, the Christian community calls for a positive response to their concerns. Addressing these issues, they believe, will solidify the Christian community’s appreciation for Prime Minister Modi.
