“Nupur Sharma’s ‘Loose Tongue’ Set Entire Country On Fire, Should Apologize To Nation”: SC On Sharma’s Prophet Remark

The Supreme Court on Friday lambasted now suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma for her derogatory remarks on Prophet Muhammad saying that she alone is responsible the recent violence in the country and she should apologize to the nation.

A bench of Justices Surya Kant and JB Pardiwala made the remarks while dismissing the plea to move all the FIRs registered against her to Delhi.

“What is her business to make these remarks?…The way she has ignited emotions across the country… This lady is single handedly responsible for what is happening in the country. She should apologize to the whole nation,” Justice Kant said.

“She and her loose tongue has set the entire country on fire,” the Court pointed out, as per Bar and Bench, her outburst is responsible for the unfortunate incident at Udaipur, where a tailor was beheaded.

Appearing for Sharma, Senior Advocate Maninder said that she has already issued a written apology,.

However, the Court said, “She should have gone to the TV and apologized to the nation…She was too late to withdraw…and too she withdraws conditionally, saying if sentiments hurt.”

Slamming the suspended BJP leader, the Apex Court said that her remarks against the Prophet were made either for “cheap publicity, political agenda or for some nefarious activities.”

It was of the view that merely being the spokesperson of a national political party does not give any person a license to say such disturbing things.

“These are not religious people at all, they make statements to provoke,” the bench said.

On May 27, Sharma made derogatory remarks against Prophet Muhammed during a channel debate on the Gyanvapi Masjid issue in Times Now. Several FIRs have been registered against her, including in Mumbai, Hyderabad and Srinagar.

The Apex Court on Friday refused to entertain the petition and asked Sharma to approach the High Court. “The conscience of the court is not satisfied. You avail other remedies.”
