Muslims around the world began marking Ramadan under coronavirus lockdown on Friday, with unprecedented bans on congregational prayers and mass gatherings. To ensure that the lockdown is strictly adhered to, the Mumbai police will be using drone cameras to monitor Muslim localities.
Mumbai Police Spokesperson Pranay Ashok also said, there is no special relaxation in any areas for Muslims to make ‘suhoor’ or ‘iftar’ purchases, which is a centrepiece of the month-long fast.
“Keeping in mind the containment zone during the Covid19, we are making arrangement and are in touch with community leaders too. The community is being encouraged to fast keeping all the guidelines in mind. Arrangements with the help of NGOs are also being made to deliver food to those who are in red zone or containment zones where stepping out is not allowed. Gathering for namaz at building terraces or mosques is not allowed. Strict lockdown will be followed,” TOI quoted him as saying.
Ramadan is the holiest month for Muslims, in which they fast from dawn to dusk, gather for congregational prayers, give in charity and share meals as a community.
For the first time ever, mosques across the world, including the two holy mosques in Makkah and Madina have been closed due to the coronavirus pandemic, which has engulfed the world.
