Renowned Islamic scholar Maulana Abdul Hameed Azhari passed away Friday midnight at his residence in Malegaon. He was 78.
The Maulana passed away due to cardiac arrest at around 12:15 Friday midnight, Ummid.com reported.
Maulana Abdul Hameed Azhari was one of the key founders of Kul Tanzeem-e-Jamaat, the all Jamaat organisation formed after the 2006 Malegaon blast, to seek justice for the local youth arrested in the case.
Maulana Abdul Hameed Azhari was a graduate from the renowned Al-Azhar University in Cairo, Egypt. After working in Saudi Arabia for over three decades, he returned to India and worked for the welfare of the Muslim community.
Through Kul Tanzeem-e-Jamaat, he along with other Ulama spearheaded a campaign that resulted in the acquittal of the Muslim accused framed in the 2006 Malegaon blast case, Ummid reported.
