Calicut Press Club has selected Madhyamam Editor V. M. Ibrahim for Theruvath Raman Award 2021 for the best editorial titled ‘Manushyatvam Kurisherumbol’ (when humanity is crucified) published in the Malayalam newspaper on 6 July, last year
The editorial concerns about the custodial death of Stan Swamy, a 84-year-old Jesuit priest and tribal rights activist, who had been arrested in the Bhima Koregaon case in October 2020. The jury judged that the editorial touched the hearts of readers at the same time incorporating facts and analysis of the case which made the article remarkable.
Senior media personalities P. Sujathan and P. S. Nirmala, including prominent media observer Dr. Sebastian Paul comprise the panel of the award comprises, said press club president M. Firoz Khan and Secretary P. S. Rakesh, according to Madhyamam website.
The award instituted by the family of Theruvath Raman, editor Pradeepam, in his memory, consists of a cash prize of Rs 10,000, along with a certificate.
NM Ibrahim began his career in Madhyamam as an assistant executive editor in June 2001. He was also the executive editor of Gulf Madhyamam, largely circulated in the Middle East.
In 2021, Ibrahim, who hold a masters degree holder in Urdu, was appointed as editor of the paper. His credit are ‘Chekuthanum Choonduviralum’ and a translation work ‘Theerthadakante kanavukal’.
