In a shocking incident that reminds of the Nazis treatment of Jews in concentration camps, a Muslim undertrial prisoner has alleged that a jail superintendent in Tihar had burn imprinted the symbol ‘Om’ on his back and also deprived him of food for two days.

A Delhi Court has ordered for inquiry after Nabbir alias Shabbir, an undertrial prisoner at Tihar jail, told his family about the inhuman treatment inflicted upon him by jail superintendent Rajesh Chauhan.

As per the order passed by Karkardoom court, Nabbir who is lodged in jail No. 4 of Tihar jail had informed his family member of the torture in jail by superintendent Rajesh Chauhan. The family members had informed his counsel who in turn brought it to the Court’s notice. Nabbir showed the injury to the judge in the jail lockup and his photographs were taken by his counsel.

“The allegations raised by the accused are of serious nature and required immediate intervention… a notice is being issued to DGP, Prisoner, Head Quarter, Jail No. 4, New Delhi to get the medical examination of accused Nabbir conducted with immediate effect and also to make enquiry report regarding the burn imprinted ‘Om’ mark on the person of the accused,” news agency ANI quoted the court order.

A report by India Today said that jail superintendent Chauhan was angry because Nabbir had made a complaint about the non-functional induction stove in his barracks. Chauhan allegedly physically assaulted him while accusing him of trying to be a leader and raising voices against jail administration.

Chauhan then told Nabbir that he had “converted to Hinduism as he had ‘fasted’ during Navratri”. The jail officials also rebuked him for his religion saying that “you Muslims have destroyed our country”.

The Court ordered that the DGP Prison submit the CCTV footage and take statements from the other prisoners within 24 hours. It also said that necessary steps be taken to ensure the safety of Nabbir in jail and he be removed from the direct or indirect supervision of Rajesh Chauhan.
