Shifa Thasneem, sister of Shamna Thasneem, the Kerala medical student who lost her life three years ago due to medical negligence, has cleared the SSLC examinations with A+ in all subjects.
Hailing from Mattannur in Kannur, Shifa’s success comes fighting against all odds. Her father K.A. Abootty passed away two years ago as his health deteriorated following the stress of his daughter’s death and the long legal battle he waged to secure justice for her.
Shamna Thasneem died on July 18, 2016, when she was studying for second-year MBBS. As per the report submitted to the government by the State Level Medical Apex Body, it was categorically stated that the death of Shamna at medical college, Ernakulam was due to the various deficiencies and irresponsible attitudes and medical negligence committed by doctors, nurses, professors, hospital superintendent, and medical college principal. The Crime Branch report also found that the student was denied proper medical attention after being admitted to the hospital in a serious condition, leading to her death.
P.K. Shereefa, the mother of Shamna, who is now fighting for justice, had sent a legal notice to the state chief secretary a year ago demanding compensation of Rs 1 crore for the death of her daughter.
Shifa is among the 3,406 students who secured full A+ from Ernakulam district.
