A new controversy has erupted after a child was allegedly dressed as Hindutva ideologue Savarkar for an Independence Day programme organised at a government school in Kerala Malappuram with various youth organisations protesting against it.
On Tuesday, activists of the Youth Congress and the Youth League – the youth wing of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) – held protest marches towards the Government Vocational Higher Secondary School at Keezhooparamba seeking action against those who dressed the child as Savarkar for the event.
News channels have aired blurred photographs of the programme, showing the children dressed as freedom fighters including Savarkar.
A photo of the child dressed as one of the freedom fighters to take part in the rally with the name of Savarkar written on him has gone viral on social media.
According to local media reports, the photo was taken from the green room. However, anticipating that it would spark a row, Savarkar’s name board was removed before the procession.
The authorities of the school have not yet reacted to the controversy.
