With hijab row resurfacing in Karnataka, twenty-four students studying in a degree college in Dakshina Kannada district on Tuesday were suspended for a week from attending classes for wearing hijab.

Uppinangadi Degree College authorities in Puttur taluk took the decision after the girls refused to attend classes without their hijab.

Several Muslim students have reportedly also applied for transfer certificates from their college to join other educational institutions where headscarf is allowed.

Further, the college authorities have informed that students who wish to attend classes wearing hijab inside classrooms could take transfer certificates.

This incident comes after BJP led-Karnataka government has issued guidelines for schools and colleges making uniform mandatory for students.

The hijab issue started when six students of Udupi Pre-University Girl’s College protested against entering classrooms without the headscarf. It was one of the major agitation that took place in Karnataka over the past year.
